Review: When It’s Real by Erin Watt (spoiler-free)

From #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt comes the addictive contemporary tale of a teen rock star in need of an image makeover and the teen girl hired to be his fake girlfriend.

Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley’s team decides it’s time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he’s settled down.

Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of “normal.” Under ordinary circumstances she’d never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn’t have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley’s team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley’s a shallow, self-centered jerk? It’s not like they’re going to fall for each other in real life…right?

My rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Expected Publication: May 30th, 2017

Firstly, thank you to Harlequin (Australia), TEEN / MIRA and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC of When it’s Real by Erin Watt.

I read the Paper Princess trilogy by Erin Watt last year (in about 3 days) and I absolutely LOVED IT! So naturally I was excited to read When It’s Real!

And damn it did not disappoint!

I don’t know what it is about Erin Watt’s books but I end up flying through them! The writing just pulls you right into the story and makes you want to see what happens next!

Now on to the story. We have the teen heart-throb/ rockstar, Oakley and the ordinary girl, Vaughn. Oakley is in need of a new image (so his PR team think) and so they hire Vaughn to be his fake girlfriend for a year in exchange for money, which her family desperately needs. Yes, this is a cliché storyline but Erin Watt wrote the book in such a way that made it unique and refreshing!

Vaughn is such an awesome heroine! She goes for comfort over fashion, sticks up for herself and loves her family. Her parents passed away in a car accident a few years earlier and with the help of her sister, they both take care of their 12 year old twin brothers.

Oakley is the mega famous bad boy musician, who you can’t help but fall for. Yes, he can be egotistical and spoilt at times, but that’s part of his character and you can’t help but love him in the end!

I absolutely adored the slow burn romance between Oakley and Vaughn.

Also, I really loved the side characters. Including the twins, Paisley (Vaughn’s older sister), Ty (Oakley’s bodyguard) and Vaughn’s friends. I’ve read so many books where the sister or friend of the heroine is mean and totally obsessed with the hero, so it was refreshing to see how they were nice and supportive of Vaughn’s decisions.

Overall, if you’re a fan of the Paper Princess trilogy, then I would definitely read this book. The reason why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is because there was just that extra something that didn’t make me love it as much as I loved the Paper Princess trilogy. I wanted there to be a little more angst and a not so rushed ending, but other than that it was a really good, fast read! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for abbiefuture Erin Watt books!
