Review: The Darkest Star by Jennifer L. Armentrout (spoiler-free)

When seventeen-year-old Evie Dasher is caught up in a raid at a notorious club known as one of the few places where humans and the surviving Luxen can mingle freely, she meets Luc, an unnaturally beautiful guy she initially assumes is a Luxen…but he is in fact something much more powerful. Her growing attraction for Luc will lead her deeper and deeper into a world she’d only heard about, a world where everything she thought she knew will be turned on its head…

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I have FINALLY finished The Darkest Star!! *throws confetti* and honestly, I already miss it.

As soon as I heard that Luc was getting his own spin-off series, I was ECSTATIC. Luc is one of my most favourite side characters in the Lux series (and probably ever), so I’m really happy that we got the chance to experience his & Evie’s story.

For me, The Darkest Star was the perfect excuse to re-read the Lux series (which was just as good as the first time I read it😍). And if you’re wondering whether or not you need to read the Lux series before this book…well, the book will still definitely make sense if you don’t read them. J.L.A really does a fantastic job at re-introducing readers (new & old) to the Lux universe and filling in all the details. But a lot of the world building and descriptions of the Luxen, Origins, Daedalus etc is explained in more detail in the lux series and we get an idea of Evie’s *cough* past in Opposition.😉 (Also, if you haven’t read the Lux series already, you are seriously missing out on all the gloriousness that is Daemon Black😍).

Aaaanyway, I went into this story having no idea what it was actually about, but I did have pretty high expectations after the Lux series. And guys, it did not disappoint. I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say that the plot was action-packed, suspenseful and filled with plot twists. At the start of the book, Evie visits Luc’s club and as soon as they started talking, sparks flew and I was hooked. I absolutely loved Luc and Evie’s relationship and how Luc was always there for her, even when her world was slowly turning upside down. Plus, it’s Luc, so it’s kinda hard not to love him.

Also, all the side characters such as Heidi, Zoe, Grayson, James, Emery and even Evie’s mum were really great. And I’m so happy that Evie in particular had a bunch of really supportive friends and family that truly cared about her, it was great to see.

My only negative about The Darkest Star is that, at times, the plot could feel a little ‘all over the place’, mainly around the half-way mark. And some scenes were a little on the slow side. But, other than that, I was still so hooked on every chapter and J.L.A truly delivered an action-packed and romantic story that kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire journey.❤️

All in all, I can’t wait for book 2 – The Burning Shadow – and to read more about Luc and Evie’s story.😍
